Making it easier for local people to see a GP
People in Newham will now find it easier to make an appointment with a doctor when they need one, thanks to the successful introduction of two new ways to book an appointment – online and with an evening and weekend GP service.
All of the 53 practices in Newham now offer patients the opportunity to view their personal medical records online, book appointments and order repeat prescriptions.
This makes it quicker and easier for local people to access the information and services they need, at a time that is convenient for them. Having access to their full medical records allows patients to make more informed decisions about their health and care, while the use of online booking systems has been shown to decrease waiting times for appointments by reducing the number of people who do not turn up for their appointment.
To register to use online services, patients should contact their GP practice or visit https://patient.emisaccess.co.uk to register for online services.
The number of GP appointments available for Newham patients has also been increased, and access to bookable appointments outside of normal GP opening hours is now available seven days a week.
People can now book an appointment with a GP between 6.30pm and 10pm on weekdays and between 8am and 8pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
GPs in Newham have come together to ensure that all patients registered with a Newham GP can have access to appointments at these times. The appointments, which are aimed at patients who may struggle to get to their surgery during normal opening hours, will take place at one of several GP hubs located across the borough at convenient locations.
After seeing the evening or weekend GP, details of the consultation and any medicines prescribed will be sent to the patient’s own GP, so the family doctor knows what has happened and what, if any, treatment has been provided.
To book an appointment, local people can call the service directly on 020 7540 9949. All appointments must be booked in advance.
Dr Prakash Chandra, a local GP and chair of NHS Newham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said:
“Enhanced online services and extended opening hours are part of continued commitment to improving access to GPs and reducing appointment waiting times across the borough.
“Offering routine appointments at evenings and weekends means that up to 500 additional GP appointments are now available for local people every week.
“Making the most of these appointments not only makes it easier for our residents to access the care they need, it also helps to free up our local A&E departments for the most serious or life threatening cases.”
