Newham’s 150 Club win BT Sport Industry Award

Newham’s 150 Club win BT Sport Industry Award

Congratulations to the 150Club Community Prescription programme which has won the prestigious BT Sports Industry ‘Community Programme of the Year 2018’ Award.

The award, which was open to organisations that use sport to benefit the community, was presented to Wayne Farah, Vice Chair Newham CCG and Layla McNeilly 150Club Coordinator and Life Style Advisor on a night that saw the likes of Sir Mo Farah, Johanna Konta, David Weir, Ellie Simmonds and many more recognise and celebrate the very best work from across the sports industry.

The 150Club works to tackle high rates of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in Newham by helping people to stay healthier. Taking its name from the recommended 150 minutes of exercise people should take per week, this ground breaking partnership between NHS Newham CCG, West Ham United Foundation, Newham Council and the Staywell Partnership used the power of football and sport over 24 weeks to inspire local residents to make changes to their lifestyle.

Other winners on the night included QPR in the Community’s response to the tragic Grenfell Tower fire; Parallel London’s fully accessible fun run and free family festival and the unique partnership of Stonewall and TeamPride’s  Rainbow Laces campaign was praised by judges.

Joseph Lyons, Chief Executive of the West Ham United Foundation said: “I am incredibly proud that the 150Club has won this prestigious award. With over 200 completers so far, and tens of thousands of minutes of physical activity racked up on the project, it is truly changing lives for people in Newham. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all our partners that we work with on this fantastic programme. I am so thrilled to see it being recognised with this award, and we’ll keep working hard to continue to deliver for our residents in Newham!”

Wayne Farah, Vice Chair of NHS Newham CCG said “For the 150Club to receive the BT Sports Industry Community Programme of the Year Award is testimony to all the hard work from our partners at West Ham, the Staywell Partnership and the London Borough of Newham. It recognises their commitment to delivering the Newham Community Prescription and improving the health of Newham's communities. I want to congratulate them all.”

The success story doesn’t stop there as we have also been nominated for two other awards:

  • Best Community Scheme – Sports Business Awards
  • Best Partnership in the Community – Global Good Awards

The Newham Community Prescription demonstrates how local communities can design and deliver health services that meet local needs. The awards and recognition we are now receiving validate Newham CCG's commitment to patient engagement in the commissioning of our local services and our shared vision with our Local Authority partners to put local people at the heart of all we do.
