NHS commissioners in Newham ranked among England’s best for public and community engagement

The NHS organisation that plans and buys healthcare for people in Newham has been rated outstanding for the quality of its patient and community engagement.

Newham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) received a “Green Star” to mark its achievement – one of only six CCGs in London and 37 nationwide to earn this coveted accolade following an annual assessment by NHS England.

The CCG was also rated as “Good” overall after being assessed across a range of indicators including the quality of its leadership, clinical priority areas and finance.

The ‘Green Star’ rating for patient and community engagement in 2018/19 recognises the CCG’s efforts to put local people at the heart of its work – ensuring services in Newham meet local needs. It is the second successive year the CCG has achieved this.

As part of its public and community engagement, the CCG has:

  • Worked with the East London Citizens Organisation (TELCO) to highlight key healthcare issues in Newham and shape community-based plans to address these
  • Developed ID cards with deaf patients in Newham to make it easier for them to access information and communication support, and raise awareness in GP practices
  • Gathered patient feedback to ensure a new minor eye conditions service for Newham delivered better access, improved care and shorter waiting times
  • Conducted a survey to understand the experiences of children and young people who attend A&E at Newham University Hospital – ensuring they receive the most appropriate advice and treatment in the right place, at the right time.

Ellie Robinson, a member of the CCG’s Governing Body and its Patient and Public Engagement lead, said: "I am pleased that we have continued with the high standards from last year and retained our ‘Green Star’ rating for patient engagement.

“This reflects the hard work everyone across Newham has put in over the last 12 months to make sure that when we say patients are at the heart of everything we do, we mean it.

“Having said this, we recognise that there's always room for improvement and we will be working closely with our patients, the public and our local partners to make sure people across Newham receive the best quality care and support."
