The latest statistics from the tenth week of NHS Test and Trace operation show the service is consistently reaching the majority of those testing positive and their contacts, and has reached more than a quarter of a million people since the service launched.
This comes as a new NHS Test and Trace app will be trialled with residents in Newham ahead of a national roll-out in September. As part of a three-week ‘early adopter’ phase, every Newham resident will be sent an email or letter with a unique code to allow them to easily install the app on their SMART phone.
The app includes a range of easy to use features including ‘infection spike’ alerts based on postcode, a digital tool that allows you to scan a ‘QR’ code when you check-in at venues such as a restaurant, a symptom checker and easy to access test booking.
Dr Muhammad Naqvi, a local GP and Chair of NHS Newham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said:
“A fully functional contact tracing app is an important part of the suite of strategies we have employed to help reduce transmission. We need to trace close-proximity contacts as quickly and accurately as possible. This is especially important when we may come into contact with people that we may not know or even remember meeting.”
"A successful pilot in Newham with a contact tracing app that can do this, will help us to return to a more normal way of engaging in activities such as work and social interaction with friends and family - knowing that our contacts can be quickly informed we get infected."
The app needs to be tested in different ways with different groups that represent the whole of the UK. Newham is an area with a diverse population who might be more at risk to the virus so trialling the app here will ensure that it meets the needs of a range of different communities.
The app will work alongside enhanced local contact tracing and testing already offered within Newham to help minimise the spread of Covid-19. It will also be available in multiple languages, including English, Urdu, Punjabi Gujarati and Bangla, and has the highest standards of data privacy and data security.
